Inspired by instruments like the Hang drum, Mandala Music is a new kind of musical instrument for the iPhone. The instrument consists
of eight notes arranged in a circle or mandala around a central note (called the ding on a Hang). Where a Hang drum is tuned to a single fixed scale,
Mandala Music comes with all of the thirty-three musical scales from around the world that were used in the manufacture of first-generation Hang drums.

Any of the 33 musical scales may be mapped to the mandala (left). The lowest note is in the center, followed in increasing pitch from the top, alternating back and forth, down to the bottom. The bottom center pad sounds the highest note. The pads are touch-sensitive so the harder you strike them the louder the sound that is produced. The four "satellite" pads repeat the previous sound and allow for rapid playing. Sixteen pre-programmed timbres (patches) are provided. They are selected using the control bar. The "<<" and ">>" buttons cycle through 5 functions: Patch, Octave Shift, Decay, Frequency Ratio, and Modulation Index. Tapping the "<" and ">" buttons cycle through the values for each function. |
